Walmart Store Project

The Poway Walmart store project Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has been completed, and the Poway City Council will soon meet to consider Walmart’s proposal to add groceries to its store. Please make plans to attend the City Council hearing on Tuesday, August 23, to show your support for bringing groceries to the Poway Walmart!

If approved by the City Council, this project will allow Walmart to expand its current building to make room for a full-line of groceries, including fresh produce, meat, a deli and a bakery. You will be able to save money on your groceries while taking advantage of convenient one-stop shopping!

About Walmart Stores

A Walmart store with groceries includes fresh produce, meats, a deli and bakery, along with general merchandise, all under one roof.

More than 2,900 Walmart stores nationwide and 75 in California offer a full line of groceries.

Walmart in Poway

The Poway Walmart currently employs about 350 associates, many of whom reside in Poway. The new store will bring additional jobs, which means more opportunities for the community.

Your Poway Walmart store is actively involved in the community. From sponsoring Chamber of Commerce events to the Poway Rodeo, we are excited to be a part of your lives.

Since 1996, the Poway store has contributed more than $800,000 to local organizations and events, including the fire and sheriff departments, schools, libraries, churches and youth sports.  Click here to see a list of organizations Walmart has supported around San Diego County throughout the past decade.

Job Opportunities

As of July 2011, the average wage for regular, full-time hourly associates in California is more than $13.00 per hour – significantly more than the $8.00 minimum hourly wage in California.

Walmart offers competitive benefits including healthcare coverage, career training programs and opportunities for advancement. Other associate benefits are:
401(k) plan Business performance-based bonuses
Profit sharing plan Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
Stock-purchase plan Merchandise discounts
Company-paid life insurance Vacation pay

Many Walmart associates have careers with the company spanning 10 years or more, and more than 70 percent of Walmart store managers began their careers as hourly associates.

Positive Economic Impacts

Walmart supports our local economy. In Fiscal Year 2009, Walmart purchased more than $620 million in goods and services from San Diego County suppliers, including from Poway businesses. This supports more than 14,000 jobs in the region.*

An independent study of 21 California cities with Walmart stores selling groceries found that taxable retail sales increased by $79 million on average in the year following the Walmart opening.**

That same study found that taxable retail sales at Other Retail Outlets (including restaurants, auto dealers, service stations, etc.) increased an additional $72 million on average in the year following the Walmart opening.**
