Poway Walmart News
It's all about the unions
July 16, 2009
Poway News Chieftain
I'm tired of hearing the same old union-organized diatribe about a Wal-Mart Supercenter affecting the business of such stores as Vons, Henry's and Stater Brothers.
Let's be realistic. Many Powegians prefer to shop at nearby Rancho Bernardo Vons and Henry's rather than the ones in Poway anyway. This is particularly true of people living north of Twin Peaks Road. There is a world of difference in product selection and shopping ambience at the RB stores. Then, there is a really nice Ralphs market nearby.
So, where is the argument that a Wal-Mart Supercenter would affect those businesses? They are already having to compete with their own brands that are just as close as the Poway stores.
I believe the main sticking point is the union that represents those stores. Wal-Mart is not unionized. From a Poway government perspective, would it be better to have a handful of union workers at a couple stores, or many more workers at Wal-Mart who would live in Poway and help contribute through higher corporate and personal taxes to the city?
And, what is wrong with letting Vons and Henry's disappear in Poway and put in more viable operations?
