Conflicting views on Walmart expansion

January 9, 2009
San Diego Union-Tribune: Letters

I’m writing in response to the Jan. 2 article “Group formed to oppose Walmart expansion”:

David Grosch, founder of No Walmart Expansion, is quoted as to why he opposes a Super Walmart in Poway. Grosch doesn’t realize that the majority of the people want it.

Yes, it will bring even more traffic for Poway. That’s unavoidable but it also means more revenue, more jobs for Poway.

My family and I live in the back- country and we love it. The backcountry is growing, too. We can’t stop growth – unless we can buy a town and limit the people moving in.

If Grosch, who grew up in Torrance, is dissatisfied with Poway, maybe it is time for him to move far out into the backcountry, say Ranchita or Descanso. No traffic there. The other grocery stores will survive but the Super Walmart will help with the very bad economy we are facing. Wake up, Mr. Grosch: People driving state Route 67 and Interstate 15 already shop at the existing but smaller Walmart. I am one. I also shop, eat and enjoy a movie in Poway once in a while, so my money is helping support your town.
